I needed something sweet. And it needed to be chocolaty and rich with a little pick me up as well. I had a little coffee left over from the French press this morning and instead of pouring it down the drain, I was determined to use it. Usually I’ll make myself an iced coffee in the afternoon as a little treat, nothing special about it, just ice and leftover coffee. But today is a special day, it’s treat yourself day! At least this afternoon is. 😉
Have you seen those tahini hot chocolate recipes on Instagram or Pinterest? I tried one recently and was hooked. Tahini is a sesame paste used in Middle Eastern recipes and is currently featured in trendy vegan Buddha bowls too. It’s similar to a nut butter but has a more savory flavor rather than sweet but adding a little honey takes it to the next level. It adds a richness to recipes which is very nice and is also great for those avoiding dairy to add creaminess to dishes without the casein. I used almond milk in this recipe and kept it completely vegan, well except for the honey but true vegans can always use agave nectar as a replacement. Adding a little almond milk to the mix helps to thin out the tahini which can be pretty rich. That was my only complaint about the tahini hot chocolate recipes I saw, a little too rich for me.
I digress, I told myself I wasn’t going to get into the details with this simple recipe. What I will say is that this is a delicious beverage that definitely hit the spot. That chocolaty, sweet spot, you know what I’m talking about. And with an extra caffeine boost to keep me going strong! Thank you very much and you’re welcome.
Iced Tahini Mocha
1 cup of coffee either chilled or at room temperature
1/2 cup of almond milk
1 tablespoon of tahini
1 tablespoon of honey or agave nectar
1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
pinch of sea salt
- I put all the ingredients, except for the ice, into a blender and blended on high for 20-30 seconds. If you don’t want to use a blender simply mix the ingredients by hand or whisk it together.
- Then I poured the rich, foamy mocha over a tall glass of ice topped with my favorite copper straw.
Blended Iced Tahini Mocha – You could definitely turn this into a blended coffee drink by adding ice into the blender with the rest of the ingredients.
Iced Tahini Mocha latte – Espresso would also be amazing in this. Use 2 shots of espresso and 1 cup of almond or soy milk and keep the remaining ingredients the same.
Hot Tahini Mocha Latte – If you would like a Hot Tahini Mocha simply use fresh coffee or espresso, heat almond or soy milk in a sauce pan until hot, whisk in tahini, honey, cocoa powder and pinch of salt until smooth. Pour over hot coffee or espresso.
So go ahead, treat yourself!
